Fashion Friday-Fashion vs. Style

Fashion vs. Style

Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashions fade, but style is eternal.”

So what does this really mean?  Isn’t fashion and style the same thing?  NO!  When YSL said, “Fashions fade”, she is talking about trends of the season, what the hottest “look” is.  But style, style is not something that can be dictated by the design houses, the advertisers or celebrities, style is unique to YOU.  Well, many of my posts have been about fashion trends, ways to dress, what to wear for your body type, what styles fit you best.  But, what I have begun to realize is that I never really offered you any guidance as to HOW to wear it.  That’s the thing, my job here is to offer up all the information I know on fits and trends, what’s hot? What’s not?  Now, I will offer up my assistance in helping YOU figure out what your personal style.  This isn’t something I can just tell you, but only give you the steps and methods to help determine your own personal style.  Here are some ideas to discern your personal style?

1.     Visual inspiration. When you are dressing for the day, what do you want to say with your color choice?  Colors say certain things, red can be a color of power, it’s very aggressive.  Blue causes the body to remain calm and peaceful; it’s also the color of loyalty.
2.     Past inspiration. Do you want to focus on a certain era?  Do you like 50’s detailing’s like cat-eye glasses?  Are you a fan of 60’s fringe? Or 70’s bell bottoms?  Use inspiration from the past to construct your image now!
3.     Celebrity inspiration.  Now, when I say this, I don’t want you to pick a celebrity that you want to be EXACTLY like because then that wouldn’t be your style, it’s not even theirs, they have stylist, like me, to dress them.  But what I want you to look at is certain things about them that you think, “Hey, that might look great with my style.”  Or maybe you identify with a certain celebrity because of their story.  Whether it’s a pixie cut hairstyle or you love the way an actress always wears rings with animals on them.  Use them to inspire you, not to dictate how you dress!  This also doesn’t have to be an actress; this could also be a singer, dancer, public figure or even a historical figure like, Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O., or Marilyn Munroe.
4.     Last but not least sometimes you just feel like it!  There are tons of times when I am out shopping and see something I like and just simply want to wear it!  I don’t need a reason.  But I know my personal style, and as should you!

So I want you to go out there and have fun.  Just take a look around and see what jumps out at you.  Remember a lot of these trends will come and go, the magazines will tell you when things are in and out.  But your style will never fade, because it’s yours and yours alone!  So stay fabulous moms!

P.s. I’ve attached a fun color guide for you!

Color Meaning

Red

Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.

Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It has very high visibility, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are usually painted red. In heraldry, red is used to indicate courage. It is a color found in many national flags.

Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect color for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. In advertising, red is often used to evoke erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, 'Lady in Red', etc). Red is widely used to indicate danger (high voltage signs, traffic lights). This color is also commonly associated with energy, so you can use it when promoting energy drinks, games, cars, items related to sports and high physical activity.

Light red represents joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and love.
Pink signifies romance, love, and friendship. It denotes feminine qualities and passiveness.
Dark red is associated with vigor, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath.
Brown suggests stability and denotes masculine qualities.
Reddish-brown is associated with harvest and fall.

Orange

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.

To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the color of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.

Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Orange is very effective for promoting food products and toys.

Dark orange can mean deceit and distrust.
Red-orange corresponds to desire, sexual passion, pleasure, domination, aggression, and thirst for action.
Gold evokes the feeling of prestige. The meaning of gold is illumination, wisdom, and wealth. Gold often symbolizes high quality.

Yellow

Yellow is the color of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.

Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow is often associated with food. Bright, pure yellow is an attention getter, which is the reason taxicabs are painted this color. When overused, yellow may have a disturbing effect; it is known that babies cry more in yellow rooms. Yellow is seen before other colors when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning. In heraldry, yellow indicates honor and loyalty. Later the meaning of yellow was connected with cowardice.

Use yellow to evoke pleasant, cheerful feelings. You can choose yellow to promote children's products and items related to leisure. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important elements of your design. Men usually perceive yellow as a very lighthearted, 'childish' color, so it is not recommended to use yellow when selling prestigious, expensive products to men – nobody will buy a yellow business suit or a yellow Mercedes. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety. Light yellow tends to disappear into white, so it usually needs a dark color to highlight it. Shades of yellow are visually unappealing because they lose cheerfulness and become dingy.

Dull (dingy) yellow represents caution, decay, sickness, and jealousy.
Light yellow is associated with intellect, freshness, and joy.

Green

Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety. Dark green is also commonly associated with money.

Green has great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. Sometimes green denotes lack of experience; for example, a 'greenhorn' is a novice. In heraldry, green indicates growth and hope. Green, as opposed to red, means safety; it is the color of free passage in road traffic.

Use green to indicate safety when advertising drugs and medical products. Green is directly related to nature, so you can use it to promote 'green' products. Dull, darker green is commonly associated with money, the financial world, banking, and Wall Street.

Dark green is associated with ambition, greed, and jealousy.
Yellow-green can indicate sickness, cowardice, discord, and jealousy.
Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection.
Olive green is the traditional color of peace.

Blue

Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.

Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness. In heraldry, blue is used to symbolize piety and sincerity.

You can use blue to promote products and services related to cleanliness (water purification filters, cleaning liquids, vodka), air and sky (airlines, airports, air conditioners), water and sea (sea voyages, mineral water). As opposed to emotionally warm colors like red, orange, and yellow; blue is linked to consciousness and intellect. Use blue to suggest precision when promoting high-tech products.

Blue is a masculine color; according to studies, it is highly accepted among males. Dark blue is associated with depth, expertise, and stability; it is a preferred color for corporate America.

Avoid using blue when promoting food and cooking, because blue suppresses appetite. When used together with warm colors like yellow or red, blue can create high-impact, vibrant designs; for example, blue-yellow-red is a perfect color scheme for a superhero.

Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness.
Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness.

Purple

Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.

According to surveys, almost 75 percent of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colors. Purple is a very rare color in nature; some people consider it to be artificial.

Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design. You can use bright purple when promoting children's products.

Light purple evokes romantic and nostalgic feelings.
Dark purple evokes gloom and sad feelings. It can cause frustration.

White

White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the color of perfection.

White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive connotation. White can represent a successful beginning. In heraldry, white depicts faith and purity.

In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the color of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. White is an appropriate color for charitable organizations; angels are usually imagined wearing white clothes. White is associated with hospitals, doctors, and sterility, so you can use white to suggest safety when promoting medical products. White is often associated with low weight, low-fat food, and dairy products.

Black

Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery.

Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative connotation (blacklist, black humor, 'black death'). Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color (black tie, black Mercedes). In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief.

Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. A black suit or dress can make you look thinner. When designing for a gallery of art or photography, you can use a black or gray background to make the other colors stand out. Black contrasts well with bright colors. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors – black gives a very aggressive color scheme.

I have seen the Future...and it SUCKS!

I have a friend who is a recovering alcoholic. She often tells me " You are only as sick as your secrets." My secret? I am 43 years old. Who is this a secret from? ME. I have been living in denial for 14 years and today I saw what the future holds. I was not pleased. I had seen warning signs but I was so deep into denial that I had "explainations" for all of the warnings.

Warnings? You ask. Yes warnings. About a year ago I started sweating at night while I slept. I told my husband and myself that it was his fault cause he is so hot! Of course he was hot 10 years ago and I never sweated like this. But let us not let reality come into our beautiful little world.

Then last week I was having a cup of tea with my girlfriend Gary.( Yes Gary is a man but Agent daddy says I am not allowed to have boyfriends so Gary is my girlfriend. Everyone is Happy.) Any whoo, I was having a cup of tea and all of the sudden my skin was hot like Georgia Asphalt in the summer. I mean BURNING. I calmly ask Gary " Is it hot in here? Or is it just me?" Gary, whose wife is a few years older than I, says " It's you. You probably need hormone therapy." HORMONE THERAPY ? But in my beautiful little world I am still 20 something. I couldn't POSSIBLY need hormone therapy.  So I let Gary's little bombshell lie there between us until I just couldn't stand it and I said " I gotta go get the kids."and I left.

The Final blow to the dam that has been holding back reality? I have been having some trouble with my eyes. I have never worn glasses. So of course I must have a brain tumor which is causing all my head aches.  Right? Apparently not. According to the eye doctor, I just have dry eyes and need glasses to drive at night. And she finishes that statement with the death blow " You know as we get older these things happen." OLDER , OLDER I am not OLDER I am 20 something. So I call Agent Daddy all indignant at being told that I am OLDER and do you know what he says? " Honey of course you are 20 something...20 something plus 20." And here I thought that he was on my side.

Planes, 24 hour Walmarts and Disease...What a Great Vacation

I had breakfast with by beautiful cousin the other day. She flew into town to see our grandmother and tell her the happy news that she and her husband are expecting a baby. As we sat at breakfast telling baby stories and giving advice I shared this story with her and I thought I would share it with the ARMY as well.

When Agent daddy and I married we were what is known as DINKs. Double Income No Kids. As DINKs we traveled quite a bit. We went somewhere every month. Vegas, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, Florida, Texas, Kansas anywhere that we could find an excuse to go and many places that just sounded "fun". So when we began having kids we really didn't feel the need to travel right away. Eventually we had two kids, my feet got itchy again, and I was booking airline tickets to Florida to see my paternal grandparents. The Skunk Ape was 3 and the Booger Monster was 9 months old. As our first trip with two kids we made some wonderful memories.
My first memory of the trip is asking Agent Daddy "Did you put everything that was on the kitchen table in the car?"
Agent Daddy huffily relied " I put EVERYTHING in the car."
Then we arrived at the airport and were removing the bags from the car I asked "Where is the diaper bag?" Agent Daddy says "I thought you had it.."
I reply "Remember when I asked you if you had put EVERYTHING that was on the table in the car and you told me you packed EVERYTHING?"
Agent Daddy answers "Well I didn't think you meant the diaper bag."
So I spent the next hour begging for diapers in the airport. I have been informed that they now sell "emergency" packs of diapers at the airport but back then it was beg or nothing.
We arrived in Tampa at 1:30 am, the last flight for the night so they were closing the airport as we arrived. My Aunt picked us up and we proceeded to 24 hour Walmart to buy a whole new diaper bag with all the fixings. have you ever SEEN the kid of people who are at Walmart in the middle of the night? Zombies and freaks. Zombies, Freaks, and People who forget the DIAPER BAG! We escaped Walmart and headed to the place we were staying.  When we arrived it was like 3 in the morning Tampa time (which is like midnight  California time which is the time we were coming from). We had two cranky sleepy parents and a couple of  sleepy kids too. Agent Daddy and I were still speaking , miracle of miracles and I never again believe him when he says he has packed everything.
The rest of the trip was wonderful we stayed in Florida for about 5 days and returned to California  easy as pie...or so I thought. What I hadn't realized is that the other people that ride on planes are DISEASED. The Booger Monster presented a 103degree temp about 2 days after we arrived home. This lasted for 3 days. On the third day the fever broke and a rash showed up all over his body. He had the MEASLES. You see he was 9 months old and you don't get immunized for that until you are a year old. Guess what else he got? CHICKEN POX! As so as the Measles rash disappeared the chicken pox started to appear. Poor Booger was ill for 21 days after our trip. So my advice to my beautiful cousin? I love you but stay off planes until your baby is a year old. Then you will avoid all the DISEASED people riding on planes and spreading joy to all the un-immunized. *********************************************************************************** Vote for me @ Top Mommy Blogs - Mom Blog Directory

Book Review: The Case of the Purple Diamonds

Title: The Case of the Purple Diamonds
Authors: HK Gilbert & Misty Taggart
Illustrated by: Tim Davis
Summary: Barkley isn't your typical dog. He lives the life of belly rubs, crime fighting and spy catching. Barley is a 'secret' Secret Service Dog for the White House. He operates undercover to keep the White House safe. With his special Gizmo Gear Collar, he is ready to take on the sneakiest bad guys, solve the most exciting cases and get a few table scraps too. A typical day for Barkley is filled with amazing surprises, unexpected adventure and a lot of fun and excitement.  We can all rest easy knowing that Barkley Secret Service Dog is on patrol protecting our National Security and chasing down evil villains.

Review:  I was given the pleasure of reviewing the first of three books in the Barkley the Secret Service Dog series that currently contains 3 books. They are available at amazon.com . Barkley also has a web page that you can see if you click here.  I have to say that this book was delightful. My son and I read it together and the prose carried both of us along on a tale of hidden diamonds and peanuts. Barkley, the adventurous Basset Hound, loves peanuts and at the end of  this book we were ready to have some peanuts as well. The villain in this book, Smedley von Smellerhousen, is well written as not to be scary but clearly the bad guy. He is out witted by a cleaver canine, Barkely,  and a curious 12 year old girl, Gabby. The other characters , Agent Knox, Barkley's owner, Tessa, the head of Housekeeping and Gabby's grandmother, as well as Josette the chef's cat, are all well defined and engaging. Barkley and Gabby become partners to solve the case of the purple diamonds. My sons favorite parts of the story are when the villain crashes down the White House stairs while being chased by our heroes.  And when Barkley tells Gabby that Josette the cat want to be put outside and Gabby does so saving Barkley from a "cat fight".  I personally LOVED Barkley yelling GIZMO every time he activated his special collar. My son has asked when we will be receiving the next two installments of this crime fighting duo. That makes this a FAB choice in my book. I will be ordering them to arrive as school starts. I know they will be fun for him to read as part of his nightly reading program for school. The story is engaging even as introducing each of the characters for this series. The illustrations are beautifully done without being over done.Often the illustrations seem to be filler in chapter books for this age but that was absolutely not the case in this book. We really enjoyed the story, writing and illustrations and I would recommend this book to anyone whose children are reading chapter books.
This book was listed as appropriate for ages 8-12. I read it with my 9 year old and the 11 year old was sucked in by the story. I would say that 9 was exactly the right age for this story but younger kids would like the story if was read to them.

I received no compensation for this review other than the book itself. This book will be part of a giveaway for Blog O Rama September 12-22, 2011. Please come back and enter to win.

The Army Goes to the Orange County Fair

Real Army of Moms ( Me)  went to the Orange County Fair Friday. I found something very interesting. The young Army men in this picture had no idea who "Rosie the Riveter" was. As you know that is the soul of this blog. I was so surprised that they didn't know such a famous icon. But they very kindly agreed to pose with me for the picture.
Then I came upon these ladies. When I asked them if they knew Rosie they said "Of course" They very kindly assumed the pose too. My goal is to get some love for Rosie. She has been my idol for many years. So if you are brave enough to send me a picture of you showing the love to Rosie like these people, I will post the pictures. I wouldn't ask you to do ANYTHING I wouldn't do. If you can get your Rosie LOVE  picture with uniformed Military EVEN better. Where do you mail your pictures? thearmyofmoms@aol.com

Thank you in advance for showing Rosie some LOVE.

Mommy Mastering: Sun glass Shape

The one accessory that I can’t live without is my sunglasses.  I can’t have enough of them!  I have some that I got for 5 bucks at a flea market and some that cost me a little more then I probably should have spent.  But for your mommy style, whether you’re driving your kids to school, soccer practice, or having a lunch date with the girls, sunglasses are a necessity to staying stylish.  Below I will address the different face shapes and the appropriate style of glasses that will be the perfect fit.

General tips:
-Keep proportion in mind, not just facial but your body as well, if you’re 5’ 2” don’t buy the largest pair of shades you see at your favorite store.
-Never cover up strong cheek bones if you have them!
-If your frames angle downwards this WILL age you, upward frames lift the face.
-Generally, the shape of the frame should be in opposition to your face shape.
-If these are reading glasses, you should update them every two years
-Most importantly, sunglasses should ALWAYS be UV A/B protected!  This protects your eyes from harmful UV rays.

If you have…

An oval face:
-Almost any shape looks good on an oval face; they are just the lucky ones.
-Frames should be as wide as or just slightly wider than the broadest part of the face.
-Don’t go overboard; stay proportionate to your features.

An oblong face:
-An oval shape or other shapes with a strong horizontal line will help shorten the face and soften the angles.
-Decorative details can add width to the face.
-A low bridge and low temple will again shorten the face and can be extremely flattering.

A round face:
-Wide ovals, cat eyes and angular shapes diminish fullness to a round face.
-Higher temples will compliment this shape well.
-Frames should be wider then they are tall, the taller they are, the more full your face will look.

An inverted triangle:
-Frames with emphasis up top will compliment this face well; this includes aviators and half-frames
-Glasses should have an angle that goes inward at the bottom.

A heart shape:
-Oval shapes, slightly rounded or a butterfly shape looks great.
-The wideness of these shapes will soften the features and compliment the face shape.

A square shape:
-Curved shapes that are more horizontal and less vertical will soften angles on this face shape.
-With this face shape avoid flat bottomed frames, this will square out your face shape and make your angles look more prominent.

Some terms you should know about sunglasses!

Polarized:  These lenses reduce glare by absorbing reflections from horizontal surfaces, such as highways or pools of water.  This is highly recommended for mommies who do a lot of driving, or are outside for prolonged periods of time.

Photochromic:  These lenses are light sensitive:  They get darker as they are exposed to UV light, this allows you to wear them both indoors and outside! They usually will not darken in the car so you will still need sunglasses for driving.

Polycarbonate:  Made from a light weight plastic, these lenses offer amazing impact-resistance, so they are great for mommies who wear their glasses while playing sports, or in the sand box!  If they baby gets a hold of them, no worries, they WILL last!

Gradient tinted lenses:  They are treated so that the lens is dark at the top and gradually lightens as they get to the bottom.  These are useful when you want to cut out that overhead glare.

Colored Lenses:

You may think that coloration on a lens doesn’t make a difference but it does!

Green-gray:  This is the most popular color for lenses, because it filters light evenly and distorts color the least.  These lenses are great for bright, sunny days.

Brown to yellow:  These lenses distort color somewhat, but allow for a higher contrast by filtering out blue light.  They are helpful for driving on overcast days, hazy days and at dusk.

Purple, pink or blue:  Lenses this color should be saved primarily to make a statement, only because they distort color perception.

I think I may have a problem...

I was watching the A&E channel with Agent daddy when a commercial came on that I have not been able to get out of my head. It has been three days now and I am still obsessed with the idea of a show called "American Hoggers". I know absolutely NOTHING about this show and yet the name keeps swinging through my conscieness like Tarzan on a vine. A little information about me, I am ADD. So the fact that a thought keeps coming back to me is unusual. My brain is like a TV set with 500 channels. I am constantly switching from channel to channel until I find something that holds my attention for a few moments then off we go to find something new to entertain myself with. The Skunk Ape even mentioned the other day that I never just watch TV with them. I am always checking my email and surfing the Internet on my phone while we watch a program. I am the one woman in the UNIVERSE that is not disturbed but the constant channel surfing that goes on with boys and men and menboys.

So although I know that I have ADD and that it is a problem, it is a problem that I am accustomed to. The problem I am having is with "American Hoggers". A & E is advertising it but it is not out yet so I can't go read about the show to cure myself of this constant "WHAT THE HECK COULD THIS SHOW BE ABOUT?" going around in my head. I mean who would really want to watch a bunch of people hunt wild boar? Shouldn't that be on the Outdoor Channel? I asked Agent Daddy about this incongruousness between the ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT network and a bunch of hunters and he reminded me that this is the same channel that shows "Billy the Exterminator" and "DOG the Bounty Hunter". So I guess bounty hunters and exterminators mated and we got American Hoggers. My brain may explode. It feel like the remote in my head is programed to go back to American Hoggers every 90 minutes. I will be surfing the web and all of the sudden "American Hoggers" will pop into my head and I will start obsessing about how this could really be a show on A&E people. I wonder if the Hoggers and the Hoarders are gonna hang out. Or maybe they will bring the wild hogs into the hoarder houses to eat all the trash. SERIOUSLY could someone EXPLAIN this show that is not even on yet to me???

I rally think I may have a problem. Can you be ADD and OCD at the same time?

The Hope Toilet

This story is based on true events. None of the names have been changed and I will probably be sued like the guy from facebook but what the heck I had to tell you anyway.

After some prompting by Sharon Ruggieri on Facebook, I have decided to build a mom friendly toilet. I have all boys and anyone who lives with truck drivers, I mean boys, knows that they are messy in the bathroom. I have asked other women when my boys would start flushing the toilet without me yelling like a fish wife. These other women, who I thought were my friends, laugh hysterically every time I ask. They tell me there is no Hope. It will never happen. So I have decided to create the HOPE toilet. This is a self flushing, self cleaning ( inside and out) toilet that has an alarm the goes off when a "deposit" has been made to notify the rest of the household that that room is no longer safe for occupancy. This toilet will also say "It's time to wash your hands." every time it flushes. This will be said before the siren goes off when applicable.

How much is a clean flushed toilet worth? What if I told you it would cost about 10 cents a day? I figure that it will last for at least 30 years. I am going to sell said toilet for $1,000.  Sharon has 5 boys and a husband, I figure she will be my first customer. Step up folks these won't last long...

The Road to Recovery

It is very apparent that in my industry, and in the fashion world in general that a certain item, whether it be your favorite sun glasses or the perfect pair of jeans, just make us feel extremely good about ourselves.  But sometimes an event comes along in life that really throws us a curve ball, knocking us off kilter and making us start all over again when it comes to not only fashion, but life in general.
A couple of years back, my mother was diagnosed with multiple types of cancer, she was first hit with kidney cancer, twice, and then a couple of years later had a fight with ovarian cancer.  She was in and out of the hospital constantly.  As her weight  fluctuated she joked that she was in a perpetual state of muumuus.  Another less severe form of this is what many mothers go through, which is the “baby weight”. And the I get vomited on all day I don't need to "dress up" feeling when your children are small.  Thinking about these things, prompted me to write about how to help those who have to take a break from fashion.  So the question is, when our body is going through so many physical changes, what are the little things we can do to make ourselves feel better?
Since, the majority of my knowledge remains in the fashion industry, I’ll let you in on some helpful tips to get you back on track to looking fabulous on the road to recovery.  After all it is the little things in life, isn’t it?
Statement items are the best way to make yourself feel and look great, when maybe all you can wear is a pair of sweat pants and a sweat shirt.  Or if you are just out of the hospital and the only thing that feels comfortable is a muumuu.  By re-building your wardrobe with these statement pieces you can integrate them back into your wardrobe when you’re ready to.

The Purse
The purse is a great way to bring a little fashion back into your life.  Not only does it have a functional purpose, but serves as a decorative piece that is size-less.  Whether you are a size zero or a size sixteen, a purse will always fit.  My mother opted for a purse that normally had multiple compartments, she had a lot of medication to carry around with her, and she is an extremely active woman who hates to stay in, even when she was recovering.  Find the perfect purse that screams, “YOU!”  And this can be your go to item to use as a pick me up. You can spend a little more on a purse as you wear it every day and a good one will last for years.

Sunglasses
Your favorite pair of sunglasses does not have to be some extremely expensive pair that cost you an arm and a leg.  One of my favorite pair that I own only cost me 7 dollars!  Find a pair you like and that make you feel FABULOUS! The great thing about sunglasses is that they match with EVERYTHING.  They always fit, and again, have a great functional use, just make sure they are UV A/B protected. Gott protect those peepers

The Watch
Another fashion favorite of mine is the watch. Of all the one size fits all items, these usually cost the most.  There were days where mom would just be wearing a pair of sweats, or a muumuu to go out to lunch.  But I remember a day in particular when we were eating at a restaurant, and the waitress complimented my mother’s watch. This put a smile on her face. A smile is your best accessory.  But remember to look for a watch that you love, and that is good quality.  Or one that just makes you smile when you wear it. A good watch should last you well over 5 years.

Jewelry
Last but not least, one of my favorite statement pieces is jewelry.  But I’m not just talking about new jewelry. Sometimes the oldest ring,  passed down from a special aunt or grandmother, or that necklace that your mother used to wear, can make great statement piece.  Ring sizes hardly change, and necklaces always fit.  Don’t be afraid, to throw on your favorite pair of earrings when going to dinner.  Or that beautiful bracelet you like to wear out to lunch. Even if you ae still in your sweats or mumuu's. You don't have to change everything all at once. Add a little something to make you feel pretty or special and you will start to want to dress up more.

Once my mother started to feel better, and fit back into her old wardrobe, she was able to optimize the statement pieces with her favorite blouse or slacks.  But even before she could wear her smaller sized wardrobe  she could still throw on her favorite ring, or the sunglasses we bought her for her birthday, and FEEL pretty and special.  And it isn't about looking like a fashionista in recovery; it is about how those pieces  made her feel while she had them on.  So remember, although fashion may be this never ending cycle of trends and colors, style never fades, and confidence is ALWAYS the best accessory.

YOU get to answer THAT one...

The other night the Skunk Ape came into my room at around midnight to see if there was anyone still awake. He does this pretty often since he takes after Agent Daddy, and rarely sleeps more than 7 hours a night. Because this is a common occurrence I have taken to DVR'ing old movies that I think are funny or just plain wonderful. The theme this summer has been 50's Sci Fi movies. Skunk Ape is a huge Sci-Fi fan so I thought he should see the beginnings of the genre. the first midnight and mom movie was "The Cyclops". Believe it or not Lon Chaney Jr. Stars in that gem. This time young Frankenstein was recorded so that was what I decided to introduce him to.  Really it's a horror/comedy but I think that all young men need to experience the genius of Mel Brooks so I choose it anyway.

The Skunk Ape was entranced. I fell a sleep shortly after the sceene where the blind man feeds Franenstein's monster. But I woke up in time to see the wedding night scene. The Skunk Ape toddled off to his own bed to sleep and I put on " The Big Sleep". I mean who doesn't want to got to sleep to Humphrey Bogart?

My point to this is that I LOVE old movies. Black and white, silent, color anything pre 1960 I dig. I got Agent Daddy hooked on old movies and now it is time to indoctrinate my children. I have made them watch many movies from the Wizard of Oz to Duck Soup. And of course they have fallen in love with the Marx Brothers. I guess everyone has. Skunk Ape being a little OCD had to research and find out everything he could about them. So we are in the car with Agent Daddy and the Skunk Ape pipes up and says " Did you know there was another Marx brother that died when he was really young?" And Agent Daddy answers " Did you know there were two more Marx brothers that no one talks about?" Now the Skunk Ape is intrigued, and Agent Daddy continues " Yeah there was Groucho, Harpo, Chico, Zeppo, Drunko, and Drago. but no one talks about them because one was a drunk and the other was a drag queen." The tea I was drinking came out my nose and the Booger Monster asks"What's a DRAG QUEEN?"
I look at Agent Daddy and say " YOU get to answer THAT one"

Is ANYONE Going to DIE?

I know this sounds crazy but for years we had a standing date at the Urgent Care/ER  every holiday. It never failed we would be at a BBQ/Holiday party and one of the kids would fall and someone would start to bleed and we would be all " Thanks for inviting us we needed to go to the ER now. It was nice seeing you again." As we rushed out of the home of our friends and over to the ER. I am not saying the kids are Klutzes but they are boys. The Skunk Ape took his first trip to the hospital at 9 months you can see that story here. Justin made it until 9 moths too at which time he contracted both the Measles and Chicken Pox at the same TIME! Never go on an airplane with a child under 1 year old is what I learned from that. At one they get all sorts of immunizations that protect them from the diseased people on a plane. I knew were were at the Urgent Care a lot when we walked in one time and the staff greeted us by name and asked " Which one this time?" We have had stitches, sprains bruises and projectile vomiting. Doesn't that sound like fun? One time the Skunk Ape came home with half his face missing. The school didn't EVEN call me. He told them he was ok and they BELIEVED him! His friend was so traumatized by looking at Josh that his mom called me to make sure that he was REALLY okay.

So eventually Agent Daddy came up with a litmus test for our kids. " Are you Bleeding, Barfing or have a Broken Bone? Then why are you crying?" This is how we tell if we need to say our goodbyes quickly at a party or if we just need to calm down a child who is not getting his way, or is being picked on. This evolved in to Agent Daddy explaining before we left for a party " We are having a blood free day today." People would hear us and laugh but you know it is good to have goals. And we have actually achieved that goal on several occasions. And we feel pretty darn good about it.

Now I have completely lost control and I ask myself " Is anyone going to DIE if I don't do this TODAY?" if the answer is no then I know I can wait until later. No use getting all worked up over an artificial time line right. So if you see that I haven't posted for a while then you will know that I asked my self...

Everlasting Lip Gloss by AVON?

The reason I used a question mark was because I am surprised how fabulous this really is. I, like a lot of people, assoicated Avon with low cost/ quality. Well let me dispell that myth right now. I have used lip gloss from just about everyone, Fusion, Sephora, Bare Minerals, and Philosophy, just to name what is in my purse at this moment. Avon has awesome prices but this ain't no drug store lip gloss.

But let me back up just a little. I may or may not have told you guys that I LOVE free stuff. I may even have to go to rehab for it cause I love free so much it is affecting my relationship with Agent Daddy. He likes minamalist and I like Free. The two don't really mix. But anyway, I entered to  win a free lipgloss from Dayno Musto and Great Buys. I was super excited to find that I had won. Then I got the lip gloss and I was STUNNED. This is quickly becoming my FAVORITE lip gloss. I am so impressed by the new AVON that I am purchasing their mineral makeup. I have used Bare Minerals for 9 years but I can't believe that I can purchase Avon's minerals for less than half of what I pay for Bare Minerals.

If you, like me and most of America, are looking to save a buck anywhere you can, Check out AVON. You will sacrifice no quality and thier makeup is 100% guarenteed. Even if you use all of the product you can still return it and shop on line by using the above link. I highly recomend this lip gloss, mine is petal, for anyone who LOVES lipgloss. Thank you AGAIN Dana for re intoducing me to AVON. This is not your mothers AVON. That is for sure. I vote FAB on this.

Fashion Friday

The LBD

The LBD (Little Black Dress) is a key item that every woman should have in her closet.  As we discussed last week, it was on my Top 10 list for every mommy to have.  So in order to help the moms find the perfect little black dress, I’ll give a quick and simple fit guide, again, by body type to help in making the right choice when acquiring this must have piece!

For curvy moms…

You’ll want to by a black dress that isn’t to form hugging; the only exception to this rule is if you want to promote your curviness.  If you want to even out your body, choose a black dress that lies over the skin.  Dresses with a full skirt, flounce or a release pleat/tuck is perfect for this.  The fullness of the skirt will even out with your curvy upper body.  For neckline stick with something that maybe cuts in to the skin, so a V-neck or even a boat neck collar.  Add a slit to cut into the figure and you can call it a day!

For short moms…

A fluid fabric is best, but be sure to mind the length, you don’t want an abundance of fabric and length.  The dress should be shorter and never stop any lower than your knee.  A princess seamed dress or anything with a detailed panel will create a strong vertical line, extending your body and making you look like you are standing taller.  Try to avoid dresses that have a visible waist seam.  This will again, dissect your body making you appear shorter.  I would advise opting for a high heel, if possible!

For broad shouldered moms…

A dress with a sleeve is an amazing option.  Remember more skin does not equal more sex appeal in a dress.  There is something very chic and high fashion about a black dress with sleeves.  Remember we want to stick to a dress that cuts into your body, so a deep V neckline would be great.  Remember to stay away from shoulder pads and any dresses with bulky shoulders or shoulder detailing.

 For heavy armed moms…

Kimono dresses work wonders for those who are uncomfortable with showing their arms!  Another option is a dress that has a loose sleeve and then tapers at the wrist.  And don’t be afraid to through a shawl or rap over a beautiful sleeveless dress if you happen to fall in love with it.

For full busted moms…

A dress with a full skirt or a detailing that releases fabric at the bottom and adds movement is good.  The fullness below will help even out the fullness up top!  Keep any detailing light and be weary when accessorizing, steer clear from long necklaces that “get lost” in your cleavage.  Also, any dress with an open neckline will definitely help.

For tummy shy moms…

An empire waist dress done right will be great.  Just be careful because some that have too much gathering will make you look like you’re expecting.  Trapeze dresses work wonders for moms who are tummy shy.  Stay away from anything too clingy.  Even a shift dress will do the trick.  And have fun with the neckline!

For bottom heavy moms…

Again, dresses that are close fitting up top and then gently fall over your derriere are a good thing.  Empire waist dresses work well in this situation, as well as trapeze dresses.  On the flip side, if you want to show of your curves, you can opt for something a little tighter, just be careful how tight!

In terms of accessories, it’s a black dress, it’s the perfect palette to paint.  Feel free to take it to a chic, classic, elegant look with black shoes and pearls.  Glam it up a bit, with an adorned shoe and jewelry with more of a sparkle.  You can be adventurous and bold and pair it with a red heel and crystal adorned clutch.  Of course, depending on the occasion you can tailor it to your specific need.  And don’t be afraid to own more than just one LBD.  A little black dress goes a long way!  Well here it is mommies!  I hope you enjoy shopping for, and wearing that little black dress!
